On October 10, 1960, former President HarrTruman spoke at a $50-a-plate fundraising dinner in San Antonio and declared that anyone planning to vote for Republican presidential nominee Richard Nixon “ought to go to hell.”

As a result of Give ’Em Hell Harry’s off-the-cuff remark, all hell certainly broke loose on the American political scene. Nixon condemned Truman and expressed pride that he had served a president, Dwight Eisenhower, who restored “dignity and decency and, frankly, good language” to the White House.
